The Rotary Club of Humble Intercontinental sponsored 8 Humble ISD students to attend the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp which is Rotary's leadership training program for young people.

This past weekend's camp for the students included over 160 other students from Rotary District 5890, the greater Houston area.

 

RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to:

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities


The Humble ISD students who completed the RYLA program are: Myra Tompkins- AHS, Brennan Macklin- KHS, Constantin Wever- KHS and Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Germany, Cyrielle (Cycy) Guillaume- KPHS and Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Belgium, Ashley Gallegos - AHS, Amanda Robinson - KHS, Meredith Davies - SCHS, and Thom Preston -KHS. All these students and their families are strong advocates for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program sponsored In the Humble ISD area by The Rotary Club of Humble Intercontinental.

RYLA programs consist mainly of presentations, activities, and workshops. These three components are supplemented by group work, which can enhance presentations and facilitate team building. Each RYLA event is tailored to participants’ ages and interests, the RI Board recommends a core curriculum that covers the following topics:

  • Fundamentals of leadership
  • Ethics of positive leadership
  • Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
  • Problem solving and conflict management
  • What Rotary is and what it does for the community
  • Building self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Elements of community and global citizenship
